Am I Unreasonable?

You know the class rings that you get with your high school graduation year on them? Did you know that these are peddled to sixth graders? Maybe it's because I come from a school where all 12 grades (all 127 of us) were under one roof and you only got a class ring in regards to graduating high school that I find this idea rather silly. Can anyone give me a valid reason to buy a ring (that's going to be too small by the end of the school year) for a child? (Yeah, I know they can be resized but anyways...)

I can understand getting a senior year ring but this seems ridiculous. Is this a common thing where some of you are? I'd never even heard of a sixth grade class ring til today when BB said that orders were being taken for them.

Am I just a cold hearted bitch who's underestimating the enormous achievement of a child making it to the sixth grade?

I completely agree with you. Just like I don't like the huge graduation ceremonies for fifth graders going to the sixth grade. You graduate when you're done with school, you get a class ring when you're graduating with YOUR CLASS. I wouldn't get my kid a sixth grade ring. Besides, most kids have such a miserable time in middle school that by the time they get to ninth grade they'll never want to wear the damn thing again.

I don't know that I wore my class ring more than a month. But I still have it!

Don't bother. And don't get me started about 6th grade cheerleaders!

I think class rings as a piece of jewelry to be worn is a joke. However, look at it this way too: this is something tangible that will serve as a memento of his days in the elementary grades. He will have something to show to his children and maybe even his grandchildren. He will remember his youth and he will remember the times he spent with you. That, I think, is the only justification for buying this ring.

I don't know if they do that where my kids go to school, but if they do, I never heard about it.

I sold my class ring when the price of gold went up. The most value I ever got out of the whole freaking experience.

Ginamonster & Bekah - I'm glad that I'm not alone!

Osbasso - I still have my high school class ring too and even wear it every now and then.

Titus - He's just getting a yearbook to remember his elementary years.

Mike - Oh come on, high school wasn't a fantastic valuable learning experience for you? Me either.

I teach 8th grade.
We sell rings for 7th and 8th grade.
It is a fund raiser for the school.

Screw the kids and their parents, sell the rings, write the check, make some scratch so the school and afford to pay teachers to teach afterschool tutorials.

Don't like it, but the principal sells it hard. Cash at stake.

I've never heard of that...! But, nothing surprises me when it comes to "marketing" and 'the selling of merchandise' in today's world!
I agree with you Chickie...it sounds really kind of crazy to me....if there are class tings for 6th graders can Kindergarten be far behind??

That ranks right up there with cap and gown graduations for preschool and kindergarten ...

Don't give in to the pressure. Class rings for sixth graders are stupid.

Joey Polanski - You are so right. I'm voting for you next year!

Thomas Vickers - It didn't occur to me that the school gets something back for it. I'd be more likely to just send in a donation to the school if it was asked for.

OOLOTH - You know, you could corner the market on the Kindergarten class rings and make some serious money! :)

Pusher Robot - At least the Kindergarten graduations are free of charge. They were at least where I come from. You probably have to buy your own tiny cap and gown here.

Monkey & R. Fuel - We aren't. BB was informed last night that he gets one for graduating high school and that's it.

JediMacFan - I think there's some confusion as to what kind of ring this is.

I can still wear the class ring I got in high school. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to wear one that I got in sixth grade. That's my decision rule. Permanent things like rings and such should be wearable/useful forever. High school is the first milestone into adulthood. Sixth grade is gust another year in elementary school.
